Lovable vs hiring a developer: which should you use to build your app?
An honest look at when an AI builder like Lovable is enough, when you need a developer, and the middle option most founders miss.
You've got an app idea and two obvious routes. You can type it into an AI builder like Lovable and watch it appear. Or you can pay a developer or an agency to build it properly. Both work. Both can also go badly wrong. Here's how to choose.
What Lovable is good at
Lovable turns a written description into a working web app. It's quick, and you can start for nothing. As of October 2026, its pricing page lists a free plan with 5 build credits a day (up to 30 a month), and Pro starts at $25 a month for 100 monthly credits.
It shines when you want to:
- test whether an idea is worth pursuing before you spend real money
- show investors, customers or co-founders something they can click
- build a simple tool for yourself or your team
If that's you, start there. You'll learn more from a rough version in a weekend than from weeks of planning.
Where AI builders get stuck
The first 80% comes fast. The last 20% is where most people stall. Common sticking points:
- Logins and accounts. Sign-up emails, password resets and redirects that work on one page and break on another.
- Payments. Taking money safely means webhooks, failed-payment handling and test modes, and none of it can be guessed.
- Data. Once real users arrive, a messy database or loose permissions become a real problem.
- The loop. You ask the AI to fix one bug, it creates two more, and your credits disappear.
None of this means the tool is bad. It means software has edges, and someone has to understand them.
What hiring a developer gets you
A good developer handles those edges from day one: security, payments, a database that holds up, and code someone else can take over later. The trade-off is cost and time. Traditional builds are quoted in weeks or months, and you're paying for every hour, including the hours spent on parts an AI could have drafted in minutes.
The middle option: AI-assisted development
You don't have to pick one extreme. AI-assisted development means an experienced builder uses AI tools to move fast on the routine parts, then does the careful work on the parts that need judgement: logins, payments, data and the design.
That's what we do at Jestr Labs. We design and build web apps with AI, in fixed packages:
- Single page: one page, designed and built, in 3 days
- Core web app: up to 3 pages and 2 plugins, in 6 days
- Full web app with payments: up to 5 pages, with a database and payment setup, in 14 days
You get a fixed scope and a fixed timeline instead of an open-ended bill.
How to decide
- Just testing an idea? Try Lovable yourself first. It's free to start.
- Built something in an AI tool and hit a wall? Bring it to a developer who knows those tools, rather than starting again.
- Need it live with real users and payments, quickly? That's where AI-assisted development makes the most sense.
